Dustin Poirier’s coach reflects on ‘nightmare’ moment that his retirement fight nearly ended in ‘worst-case scenario’

The last UFC fight by Dustin Poirier contained the kind of drama that fans expect from him.

While Poirier claimed that he was more reserved moisture than in the past, he still delivered a classic fight before he hung up the gloves for good.

'The Diamond' announced his retirement for UFC 318, with Poirier a 'letter to the game' in the aftermath of this last weekend.

The result did not go on its way, but that did not stop on July 19 to feel an incredible broadcast for the former interim light weight champion.

Max Holloway and Poirier were respectful to each other throughout the entire fighting week, but that does not mean that 'blessed' did not try to end the fight as quickly as possible.

Mike Brown remembers that his reaction to Dustin Poirier is dropped by Max Holloway in the first round

Dustin Poirier will be remembered as one of the most consistent entertaining hunters we have ever seen in the Octagon.

His ability to keep fighting in the eye of the storm has led to a number of incredible battles and 'The Diamond' had to trust UFC 318 on UFC 318.

Poirier fell by Max Holloway in the opening round and suddenly fans all over the world looked at the prospect of his pension fight that ended in a devastating loss.

His coach, Mike Brown, thought about this moment in an interview with MMA Fighting.

“It was scary like hell. I thought oh no, it was like the sausage case scenario. He got bad, he fell off and now he is suddenly mounted. Almost like a body triangle, almost the worst situation you could be. It's like oh no, what he comes from? This is not what we want.

“But somehow as he, he survived, fought it, he fought, rose again, the place went crazy. Then he dropped Max shortly afterwards in the next round. So it brought a big drama to the event and provided an exciting show.”

As Brown said, eventually, the early adversity where Poirier came back from only a more entertaining fight that showed exactly why he was so loved.

“If he had stopped in the first, it would have been terrible. Then we would sing another tune. We would all not be so satisfied with what was going down. It would be a nightmare. But it was a great fight.”

Mike Brown was 'happy' that Dustin Poirier went for 'another guillotine for the road'

After being injured in the first round, Dustin Poirier responded in the second in what was a round of the year before 2025.

The round ended with Poirier who dropped Max Holloway before he quickly jumped for his characteristic guillotine choke while trying to reach an iconic finish.

It has been a joke for a while that his coaches hate when he does this, but on this occasion Mike Brown was happy to see 'the diamond' attempt to produce something special.

Dustin Poirier has said that if he wins a fight from Guillotine Choke, he will get a bronze statue of himself in that position for his front garden 😅

“To be honest at the time I was happy that he went for it,” said Brown. “I was like wow, I thought damn, there is a God. If He touches this, there is no doubt about it, there is a God and he is involved in fighting.

“We thought there was no chance that he would ever be able to jump Guillotine. He was there. He still had a guillotine for the road.”
