Newcastle -Baas Eddie Howe has admitted that he is not sure if Wantaway striker Alexander Isak is returning to the training in the midst of the uncertain future of the Swedish International in St James' Park.

Isak is being chased by Liverpool, who has already seen an £ 110 million bid, rejected by the Magpies. The player is restless in Newcastle after he told the club that he wants to consider his options this summer – but the Magpies want around £ 150 million for his signature.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a fantastic campaign at Newcastle when he shot 27 goals to help them secure Champions League football and also inspired them to win the Carabao Cup.

But Newcastle stands for a huge struggle to keep Isak in the club after the end of the transfer window after he refused to join the club during their pre-season tour through Asia.

In the past week, Isak has only trained in the training facilities of his old club Real Sociedad to let himself be taped for the new season, despite a lack of progress in the conversation between the two clubs.

And Howe – who had previously been cheerful about the prospect of Isak who would stay with Newcastle – admitted that he could not be sure that he would join the group in the near future after their friendly against Tottenham.

“Of course I would like him to be, but I don't know if he will do that at the moment,” said Howe when he was asked if he could expect that Isak would return to training. “Other people have had to deal with that situation at home.”

Howe distanced himself from the continuous transfer speculation because he said he was only informed that the approach of Liverpool had been rejected – because he was insisting that he would continue to support Isak despite his desire to leave.

“I was informed of an offer yesterday and that bid was rejected, all before I even heard about it,” said Howe. “People back in England have to deal with the situation.

“I don't know what happens next. From our perspective we still support Alex in all ways and my wish is that we see him again in a shirt in Newcastle.”

Newcastle has performed plans for the successor to Isak in the event that he leaves after launching an £ 70 million bid for Red Bull Leipzigt Benjamin Sesko.

The magpies already missed the signing of Hugo Ekitike after a bid of £ 72 million rejected by Eintracht Frankfurt, where the player came to Liverpool instead.
