England 6-1 Wales: Ella Toone issues warning to Sweden as England book QF spot

Ella Toone gave a warning to the quarterfinals opponents of England, Sweden after a emphatic 6-1 victory on Wales on Sunday, where the midfielder stood on the score sheet for a second consecutive game.

Georgia Stanway, Toone, Lauren Hemp, Alessia Russo, Beth Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones were all on goal for England, who finished Group D-two to France ended after their 5-2 victory over the Netherlands.

“They must be scared,” Toone said, speaking with ITV Sport, while England insured the qualification of the most difficult quartet in the competition.

“It will be a difficult game,” she continued alongside teammate Russo. “We watched Sweden last night, and they were really good – a very good counter -attacking team. We just have to be on our best game. We've been the last few games.”

Sweden, all three of their competitions to the top group C, came from behind with a four-goal to beat Germany on Saturday and to set up the last-like meeting in Zurich on Thursday.

The lion ribbons have now reached the knockout rounds for a third euro tournament in a row and the fourth in the last five.

Toone added: “We were really good. It is always difficult to play against a team in a low block and there is not much room for us, but I think we are tired, and it was nice that we got early goals in the first half. We really enjoyed the game.”

The second place could also be an unexpected bonus, because on condition that they pass the Sweden, England avoids world champions in Spain in the semi -final.

“We scored six goals and a large part of the game that we dominated, a very good match,” said England -Baas Sarina Wiegman. “Playing well is the most important, who scores is not that important.”

A lot was made about the rivalry between the two nations, where Wales wanted nothing better than to spoil the party of England, but the ruling champions showed their enormous experience against a Wales side that made their most important tournament debut.

England has won 10 of the 11 meetings between the two teams, with the best result of Wales a 0-0-look game in 2018.

Wiegman added: “I am very happy. We knew for this tournament how difficult this group would be, then when you lose the first game, enormous urgency is to win the other two.

“It gave many lessons with the team and it brought us together – I think that is pretty good.”

Wilkinson: painful loss shows a gap between us and 'top teams'

Wales Boss Rhian Wilkinson speaks on ITV Sport:

“This was not our game. We were surpassed and I was excluded. We know we will take a lot of it, but I feel for the players. I would not want to stand with another team.

“There is a gap between us and the top teams and we know that. My job is to keep pushing and closing that gap.

“I want to thank all our support. It was a difficult game to stay loud and they did that for us. At home we have work to do. This is not a team that is ready for tournament game in terms of three, four, five rugs back.

“That is an area of improvement. This was a painful one.”
