Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has admitted that his side was 'good luck' to win the Super Cup on penalties against Tottenham.
Spurs dominated the French giants for the majority of the first competitive match of Thomas Frank who is responsible for the club, with full control over the game grabbed thanks to goals by Micky van de Ven and the newly named Captain Cristian Romero.
But PSG organized a dramatic late comeback in Italy after the second half of Lee Kang-In and Goncalo Ramos had replaced to force a penalty shootout, which won the Ligue 1 champions with 4-3 subsequent misses from Van de Ven and Mathys Tel.
Enrique gave a brutal honest judgment about the performance of his side after the game, and admitted that PSG was 'very happy' and that Tottenham earned it to lift the trophy.
“We didn't deserve that 80 minutes,” he announced. 'I think Tottenham deserved to win the game because we can feel that they were in shape and can feel that they are training for six weeks.
'They played a great game and we only trained for six days. Sometimes football is unfair and I have to say that the past 10 minutes we were good luck to score two goals.
“I have to say that my players had faith like our supporters until the last moment, but football is unpredictable and in that sense I have to say we were very lucky.”
PSG's lack of training prior to the new campaign took place as a result of their participation in the inaugural club World Cup.
The Paris outfit suffered a 3-0 defeat by Chelsea in the final, which was performed in the United States only a month ago.
Asked whether a lack of preview training influenced their performance in the Super Cup, Enrique replied: 'Absolutely, from the first minute when the players touched the ball, when the players played without having the time to think about where to pass.
'Yes – a lot of incorrect passes and it is difficult to play the way you want to play if you don't train. I have to say it was like a miracle (to win). '
After the game, TNT Sports Pundit Glenn Hoddle claimed that Spurs could take many positives from the game, despite the loss of a heartbreaking way in punishment.
The Tottenham legend, who, like Enrique, believed that Frank's side was superior to PSG, said: “(Spurs_ held their own, they were by far the better team. I think Luis Enrique actually apologized a bit in a way when he went to Thomas Frank there.
'For me, when they analyze the performance, it will give them so much conviction to enter the Champions League. Playing against this great side that the Champions League has won: “We went toe to toe and more, and more than 90 minutes we were the better team”.
'The replacements made the difference, but at the end of the day they have a Champions League to play and I think that's a template.
'The way they played there, don't be surprised when they play Liverpool, when they play Manchester City, when they play Arsenal – that's a template to play in the Champions League and maybe away from home.
“That is something that they will really understand. They will look and analyze and say: “We were the better team”.
'So that is now a template to go on the front foot and go toe with these teams. That is a huge performance of Tottenham tonight from the point-of-view of a manager.
“Yes, it is emotional and disappointing because you are 2-0 with 10 minutes to go and you have lost the trophy, but at the end of the day I think it is a real positive night for Tottenham.”
