EPL make major Oliver call after controversial Merseyside derby performance

The Premier League has made a huge decision about Michael Oliver's involvement in Gameweek 26.

Oliver, 39, is generally considered one of the best referees of the Premier League, but he had a tough evening during and after last week's last Merseyside Derby in Goodison Park.

Everton captain James Tarkowski scored a 98th minute equalizer to the joy of the supporters of the Toffees in the stadium.

And nobody could predict what followed. Shortly after the goal, Everton -midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure seemed to taunt the supporters of Liverpool in the end of the ground.

Reds -midfielder Curtis Jones was not the quite satisfied and ran over before confronting the Mali International.

The couple became engaged in a struggle and both were shown second yellow cards from referee Oliver.

But the drama did not stop there, because Liverpool -head coach Arne Slot and assistant Sipke Hulshoff red cards were shown after a heated exchange with Oliver and his officials after the last whistle.

Slot, 46 and Hulshoff, 50, have since been sued by the Football Association (FA), and both have until Wednesday 19 February to respond.

But what kind of Oliver now? Well, last weekend he was taken out of the shooting line and used as a video assistant referee (VAR) during the 3-0 defeat of Chelsea against Brighton on the Amex on Friday before playing the same role during the 1-1 draw of Aston Villa Against Ipswich Stad in Villa Park the next day.

He returns to the field on Wednesday evening, because UEFA announced that he will be the referee for the fully French collision between Paris Saint-Germain and Brest in the second stage of the Champions League play-off in the Parc des Princes.

Will he return to Premier League promotion this weekend?

Yes, the League has announced the official line-ups for Gameweek 26 on their official website on Tuesday morning.

Oliver, assisted by Stuart Burt, James Mainwaring and fourth official Dean Whitestone, will be the Saturday evening match between Villa and Chelsea in Villa Park.

With competitions that get into the top flight, the competition announced the officials for Gameweek 27, which takes place between 25 and 27 February.

The 39-year-old takes the lead in Brighton's collision with Bournemouth in the Amex.
