EPL things we learned: Newcastle’s unsung hero deserving of an England call-up

Manchester United was given the newest memory of how big the gap is between themselves and those teams that chase a top four -finish while they were thrown around Newcastle United on Sunday.

Tottenham Hotspur had a similar painful weekend and lost 4-2 to Wolves, while Chelsea and Manchester City spared their bloost with a 2-2 draw and 5-2 victory, both of which fell 2-0 in matches against Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace.

Liverpool took off the Premier League title within six points after Arsenal's draw at home at Brentford was linked to the slender victory of the Reds in Anfield against West Ham.

In the meantime, the race for the top five will be even more nail biting after Nottingham Forest had taken up against Everton, while Newcastle placed itself in line for their midweek game-in-hand against Crystal Palace.

And that is all before the game on Monday evening, that Bournemouth Play in the form of Bournemouth hosts in Fulham in Monday Night Football.

In the latest episode of this weekly column, Mail Sports Five of the most interesting points from the last matches of the Premier League.

Time for an English call-up

Thomas Tuchel took a seat in St James' Park on Sunday afternoon with a whole series of players to throw his eye.

Nick Pope was among the Sticks for Newcastle, while Dan Burn, who recently received his first international call-up, anchored the defense of the Magpies.

Harvey Barnes, who scored twice in the 4-1 victory, played in the lead and he has felt part of the three Lions team since his last and only in 2020.

But the Tuchel player undoubtedly wanted to get the man on the opposite wing for Newcastle: Jacob Murphy from closer.

The 30-year-old can now count himself in the form players in the country and never his land covered and only one under-21-year-old limit according to his name in 2017-he may have written off his chances.

Yet teammate Burn is a sign that age is just a song and Tuchel is going to reward players for merit and no player would earn the recognition of the German at the moment than Murphy.

His assist on Sunday for Barnes' first goal made the 19 goal contributions and counting for Murphy this season.

“(Murphy) has been very, very important and probably more than people realize,” said Newcastle -Baas Eddie Howe recently.

“Isak probably owes him most of his goals with his crossing power, which has always been very strong.”

As recently revealed by e -mail sport, Murphy has decided to change his international loyalty to Nigeria, despite interest, so that the door remains open to England.

'To see then [Burn] Get his call was great, “said Murphy last month. 'It gives you that extra motivation to know that it is possible. We have Gordy [Anthony Gordon]Lewis Hall, Tino [Livramento] And if you kick it with them every week, you know what you have to offer, you think there will be every chance in the future.

“I keep my head down and you know, I just won a cup with Newcastle, so who says no to get a call-up?”

England is blessed with a range of attacking players in broad areas, but when it comes to form people like Murphy, it deserves to be recognized.

Nothing about Sunday's outing will also have given Tuchel off that line of thought.

Talk to the field, Matheus!

Matheus Cunha wants to leave wolves, that much is clear.

But there are ways to tackle it and what he thought on Saturday with his messages on social media, I have no idea.

24 hours from Wolves' collision at home against Tottenham, where Cunha returned after a ban of four games, he went to his Instagram story to arouse problems.

'Time to be happy. I will follow my dreams and yours … so stay cool, “Cunha wrote, before he quickly removed it. Not before Wolves fans of course saw it.

Then shared by a fan page, instead of leaving it alone, Cunha bit back.

“Do you know what you want?” Cunha said. 'If people don't like me here, I unfortunately go to the field to solve the problem of your favorite club.

'I am not here looking for alternatives to be someone important. Fans carrots for their own, they always do not create setbacks. '

It has been all week for players who became nuclear with their words outside the field.

Andre Onana took a chance of Lyon before a word war with Nemanja Matic dominated the run -up to a Europa League match where he made two expensive mistakes that led him to be taken out of the side.

Now it was Cunha's turn to again burn the flames of dissatisfaction that he wants a movement in the midst of interest from Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal.

Cunha is a cash register, no doubt about that. He came up, scored to bring 4-2 and then looked to apologize by his party. For some who will sound hollow.

Cunha will get the move he wants this summer; Undoubtedly, a team will activate its £ 62.5 million release clause.

But cut out the foolish messages on social media and keep your statements for the field. You are ashamed of yourself.

Arsenal's air bombing

Looking at Arsenal's draw against Brentford on Saturday night it felt like a training session for corners, such was the regularity with which Declan Rice and Co Set pieces found.

It was also not just a feeling. The data support it.

Arsenal's 10 first half corners versus Thomas Frank's side was the except for the first half of the Premier League in 21 years.

Since 2003-04, only against Bolton (11) in September 2008, and Aston Villa (11) in March 2012 they produced a larger air bombing in one half.

But for a change, Arsenal looked human of these angles and produced an expected goals (XG) of only 0.05 sets in the first half.

In the Premier League this season, on average, only Tottenham Hotspur (7.0) wins more corners per game than Arsenal (6.72).

On the other hand, no team gives up fewer angles to opponents than Arsenal (2.94).

So you can hug for those parties that are ready to play Arsenal between now and the end of the season for the air bombing …

Joao does it again … and again

When a statistics is shared and only Mohamed Salah is for you, you know that you are in good company.

And that is where Brighton striker Joao Pedro is now, the second only for Salah when it comes to the scored penalties since the beginning of last season.

Pedro's pair of spot kicks against Leicester City On Saturday takes his count to 15 and counts, only three behind Runaway Player of the Year -Competer Salah.

Since 2020-21, then in Watford, Pedro has only missed one penalty in his career, in a 1-0 win against Aston Villa by Robin Olsen. That gives him a career conversation of 94.4 percent from the place.

Teammates are so relaxed to see him step on the spot – and with good reason.

In his few penalties during the weekend, Pedro Former Seagulls midfielder Alexis Macallister, nowadays in Liverpool, and former striker Glenn Murray as the best Premier League Penalty Taker by Brighton with nine scored in the competition, the duos Seven.

There have been some clinical fines in the competition in recent years when you think of Ivan Toney in Brentford and, more recently, Cole Palmer in Chelsea.

But Pedro is perfect with the best of them.

Steel nerves for the greatest moments? Look no further than the Spot-Kick Supremo on the south coast.

The most underrated striker of the Premier League?

The goal of Yoane Wissa in Arsenal saw Brentford becoming the first team that two players scored 15+ goals in the Premier League this season.

Bryan Mbeumo has 16 and many have tipped him for a large move this summer.

But the name of Wissa is rarely put in the mix for that next step – the question is, why not?

The 28-year-old is currently at the height of his powers and so many clubs would have improved much if they had let him lead their attack.

“He has been very good,” Baas Thomas Frank told the BBC.

'How many teams have their No. 9 who scored 15 goals? Maybe Alexander Isak and Erling Haaland? That is exceptional for him. A big credit. '

The career of Wissa has been something of a slow burning, but he now plucks the rewards and although he may never end up with that 'big' movement – compared to Brentford – he knows that he can go on a weekly basis with the best of the best and that is invaluable at this level.
