Erling Haaland cannot be considered in the same bracket as Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo after giving up a penalty in the FA Cup defeat of Man City to Crystal Palace, says Wayne Rooney.
City was beaten 1-0 in Wembley by Crystal Palace after Omar Marmoush had saved a fine from the first half by Dean Henderson, who was lucky to still be on the field after avoiding a red card rating by VAR.
Haaland, the usual penalty contractor of the city, handed the ball to Marmoush with 10 minutes left of half and Palace up 1-0 up thanks to the early opener of Ebereechi Eze, but Henderson arranged himself correctly to deny him.
Former Manchester United -Spits Rooney wondered if Haaland, only two games back from an injury, pass on responsibility because he was overwhelmed by the pressure of the moment.
“Erling Haaland is a world -class attacker, but when we talk about Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, there is no way they give that ball away,” said Rooney on BBC Sport.
“That is what the two players separate from Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe and these players.
“They are selfish and they want to score every game.
“If he misses the opportunities, I think you can see it comes to him and it will affect him.
“Perhaps the thought to take a penalty at Wembley may have been too much for him. You never know, he is a human.”
Stadsbaas Pep Guardiola had expected Haaland to increase and says that the decision for Marmoush would make the fine, was taken by the players on the field.
'I thought he was [would] Do you want to take it, “Guardiola said about Haaland after the game.” We didn't speak. There are questions in the meetings, and there are things that are ready.
“That moment for the free kicks, the penalty, is mainly [about] How you feel. They saw that Omar was ready to take it. “
After the game, Henderson revealed that he had more faith in a penalty from Marmoush Dan Haaland.
“Haaland may have been performed, I wasn't sure which way he would go,” the goalkeeper of the palace told BBC Sport. “He gave it to Marmoush – I knew what way he was going. I knew I would make it.”
Henderson previously has for saving Spot-Kicks at Wembley, after he had already done this for Shrewsbury in the League One Play-off final in 2018, when they are on loan from Manchester United.
“I saved a fine for Shrewsbury a few years ago,” he said ITV Sport. “I had my chances in that corner. He hit it hard and I went in the right direction.”
Henderson should have been sent away?
Henderson had escaped a broadcast not long before his penalty hero deeds after he seemed to handle the ball outside the area when Haaland seemed ready to hit the ball past him.
VAR assessed the incident after referee Stuart Attwell missed the handball and felt that Henderson had treated the ball outside the boundaries of his box, but decided that it did not deny any goalscores chance because the ball traveled away from the goal.
Former urban pegdiger Joleon Lescott said it was “one of the worst decisions” he had seen in football, while Ian Wright described the official officer as “pathetic”.
After the competition, Henderson raised questions about his potential red card.
'I didn't know [the VAR review] Was for me, “he told ITV Sport.” What does it matter, it doesn't matter. I am not bothered. “
