Marash Kumbulla's attempt to remove an Alexander Sorloth, nodded down, reached Cesar Azpilicueta, whose quiet shot with the right foot from outside the box found the net in the 38th minute.
Sorloth missed a chance to double their lead shortly after the restart, was missing by only centimeters, and Espanyol could grow in the game.
The fault of Clement Lenglet on Leandro Cabrera on the edge of the box saw the hosts grant a penalty in the 69th minute, and Puado made no mistake from the spot and sent a powerful effort in the roof of the network from 12 Yards.
Griezmann, who became the foreign player with the Laarga performances in this game, tried to find a late winner, but saw his first low shot by Joan Garcia Dwarsreken.
Atletico is now Winless in their last three games, because they do not put an end to the undefeated home of Espanyol, and stay third at 57 points, six under leaders Barcelona. Espanyol, two points above the relegation zone at 29.
