In recent months, El Hilali has started to attract the attention of a number of Premier League clubs. Following this, he revealed to Diario AS that he turned down a move to Manchester United as a youth. Closer to home, he also dismissed Barcelona, Espanyol's bitter rivals.

“Man United wanted me just when Barcelona tried to re-sign me, but it was very clear to me that I wanted to stay at Espanyol. Sometimes money can make you hesitate, but that wasn't my case because I knew what I wanted. I preferred to be guided by the heart. I felt that I had to continue here.”

Depending on whether Espanyol stays on this season, next summer could be busy for El Hilali, especially if one of the clubs interested in his services makes his move.
