Nottingham Forest moved into second place in the Premier League – for at least 24 hours – by claiming a 2-0 victory over Everton, whose attacking woes continue.
It was another spirited performance from Nuno Espirito Santo's side, who recovered well from losing centre-back Murillo to injury in the warm-up.
Forest deservedly took a first-half lead when Chris Wood played a one-two header with Anthony Elanga before curling the ball above Jordan Pickford.
That move was made by Morgan Gibbs-White, who played a glorious long ball to unlock the Everton defense for Wood to punish them. And it was the same Forest midfielder who took second place after an hour through an Everton error.
Abdoulaye Doucoure made a late backpass which Elanga picked up. He found Wood in the penalty area who squared it with Gibbs-White, who cut inside Doucoure and smashed the ball high into the net.
There was little response from Everton, who dropped Dominic Calvert-Lewin to give Armando Broja a first start of the season but did not register a shot on target until the 80th minute at Goodison Park.
They were also fortunate that James Tarkowski was not sent off in the first half when he took a hard shot at Forest striker Wood after just a booking.
The last clean sheet means that Sean Dyche's side have not scored in seven of the last nine games. Although this is only their third home league defeat of the season, their form at Goodison Park is declining as they hover just above the relegation zone.
More to follow.
