One of the big decisions Hansi Flick has had to make in recent months concerns his starting goalkeeper. Marc-Andre Ter Stegen's serious knee injury had left the position open, and for now at least it is being vacated by previous backup Inaki Pena, despite the arrival of Wojciech Szczesny.
According to MD, Pena discussed his feelings about the situation, and he also paid tribute to Flick for the faith he has shown.
“Mentally I am the same, but everything is right and especially when you play matches, you gain confidence. The first results I had when I entered the goal were positive. I am very grateful to Flick for the trust he has shown me.”
Pena struggled last season when he came on for Ter Stegen, although he is happy to have the opportunity to contribute again for Barcelona.
“Last year the results in the Super Cup and the final hurt us. At group level the season was tough and when I had to play it was the decisive part of the season, but last year I can't even remember. On a personal level I am very good, it is important to play games with continuity and I think you can see that.”
