Ex-Blues star insists fans didn’t want Delap with Jackson will still be main-man

Former Chelsea -midfielder Mikel John Obi said that the new striker Liam Delap was not the man who wanted to see fans arriving at Stamford Bridge this summer.

Speaking about Dazn's report on Chelsea's Club World Cup -opener, the former Nigeria International pointed out a countryman when he explained who he thought was a more popular choice.

“We need someone to come in, score goals and end those opportunities,” said John Obi, who played more than 200 times for Chelsea.

Of course he [Delap] Is not the man who wanted the fans. We know who the fans wanted.

“The fans wanted Victor Osimhen to come to the club, but he didn't.

'It is clear that the club decided to go with Delap. He is young, he gets better.

Hopefully he will hit the ground and then he will calm down those doubters.

'I wish him the best, I hope he succeeds in this club. I think he can do that.

“The runs I saw today, run behind defenders, I think he can be the man to finish those opportunities.”

Delap, 22, recently came to Chelsea from Ipswich in a relocation of £ 30 million from Ipswich.

He debuted for the club on Monday evening and packed an assist in Chelsea's 2-0 Club World Cup opener via Lafc.

While Jon Obi praised the contribution of the young person, he believes that he will start next season as a second choice under Enzo Maresca.

“But, Nic Jackson, let's not forget, I still think he will be the most important man,” he said.

“He just has to work on his finish. I still think he will be the man who starts the season.

'During the season, if he doesn't score, Delap gets his chance.

“Healthy competition is really important.”

Chelsea's next Club World Cup collision is on Friday against Brazilian side Flamengo.
