
A former midfielder of Manchester United could not stop the tears after a new setback only five minutes after his return of an injury.
The 35-year-old, who spent five years on the books in Old Trafford, was created as a second half replacement for current side Boca Juniors away at Newell's Old Boys, with the visitors 2-0.
Other Herrera has missed six of the 11 league matches of Boca by injuries since he arrived in January and came back after he had been put on the neighborhood for their abuse of Defensa on March 16.
Five minutes after his return, and the second half, the Spaniard pulled up and held his groin and immediately indicated that he could no longer continue.
Instead of going to the ground and waiting for a replacement, Herrera did not waste time by bumping right from the field and sitting on the couch, leaving Boca for a few minutes with only 10 men on the field on the field.
After EXequiel Zeballos finally came to the field instead of the midfielder, the cameras fell to an emotional Herrera who could be seen crying when he was comforted by teammates.
The injury was a repeat of the same problem that Herrera held during his first month in Argentina for six consecutive games.
It was again a big blow to the former United Man, who was plagued by injuries since he came to Boca from his Boyhood Club Athletic Bilbao.
Although this is supposed to be a repeat of the previous two muscular problems that Herrera has arrived since the door, Boca Juniors -Baas Fernando Gago did not seem to be sure how long he will be on the sidelines.
“I have no idea what the extent of his injury is,” Gago said. “We will perform the necessary tests and find out what kind of injury he has.”
It is now six years ago that Herrera last put on the Red of United and the club left in 2019 after five seasons in Manchester.
He joined United as the first permanent signing of former manager Louis van Gaal in 2014 and immediately became a beloved figure under the United Terraces because of his persistent and passionate versions in the Anchor of United's midfield.
The Spaniard was a total of 189 times for the Red Devils in all competitions and helped Van Gaal to a farewell gift from the FA Cup before he won the League Cup and Europa League under Jose Mourinho.
Herrera then exchanged the northwest of England for Paris and spent three years at PSG before returning to Bilbao – where he played before he moved to United – in 2022.
Despite the expansion of his contract with Athletic Club at the end of last season, Herrera chose to see the rest of his career in Argentina with Boca, although his short spell in the club was far from fruitful.
