Former Manchester United star Angel Gomes will stay in Lille until the end of the season before he leaves a free transfer – who opens the door to a return from Old Trafford.
The midfielder received the attention during an impressive spell on the Ligue 1 side that has seen him earn a call-up for the English team under Interim boss Lee Carsley.
Gomes has since picked up four caps for the Drie Lions and has attracted attention, with Premier League teams who now watch a movement.
The 24-year-old is said to have chased Tottenham and West Ham United, but according to De Telegraaf, every movement will have to wait until the summer, when he will be available for free.
The report claims that Gomes has agreed to stay in Lille for the rest of the campaign before he makes a final decision about his future.
A return to the Premier League will most likely look like and there have even been reports that he could go back to United. He told L'Equipe that leaving Old Trafford was initially “very difficult” in 2020 and that he would like to return one day.
“It was a very difficult decision,” he said. “In my heart I wanted to leave my head, I thought about staying. But I had to follow my heart. I felt that I had to take another step in my career.
“I felt that if I had stayed, there would not be many opportunities for me. Luis Campos [Lille’s then sporting director] And Lille spoke about their project and I believed more in it, that was what convinced me to move – the belief that Lille had in me.
'Do I suggest that I come back one day? Of course it is at home. I would like to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the floor and keep playing, so that it is the best of it. I cannot predict what will happen in the future. “
United already has Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte as solid central midfield options, but will need more depth in that position with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen who will probably leave next season.
Gomes has made a total of 132 performances for Lille and scored ten times. He started their last two games and scored last week in a 6-1 win over Feyenoord in the Champions League.
