The pundits on MUTV claimed that Manchester United should be looking for new players, which is their latest contradiction.
The club's internal channel broadcasts coverage of every match, providing insight and opinion on the state of play at Old Trafford. Unlike an independent show, MUTV often tends to support the current group and is less critical of the players and manager.
However, they saw Ruben Amorim's side lose a fourth game in five as they fell to Wolves on Boxing Day. Well-known shortcomings, especially from set pieces, came to light when the team was still in the bottom half of the Premier League.
Next month's transfer window offers Amorim the first opportunity to expand his squad, which clearly needs reinforcements. Despite spending millions in the summer, the Red Devils are still a long way off the leaders and both Danny Simpson and Sammy McIlroy want to see reinforcements.
“I'd be surprised if he doesn't say that,” Simpson said when asked whether Amorim would tell Ineos he needs new signings. “I think there must have been a conversation about him needing his own players. Or others who didn't.” I have played a lot, but new players need to come in.”
This was echoed by fellow expert Sammy McIlroy, who said: “I completely agree with that. One or two, I'm not talking about 'oh we need four or five', but even one or two at this stage. you a lift.”
Amorim has made it clear that his immediate priority is the implementation of his philosophy, which will lead to some pain in the short term. The former Sporting Lisbon boss has not stepped in and has demanded huge sums, which are believed to be in short supply, and instead wants to work with the current group.
He said: “I'm very focused on seeing my players, understanding my players and I think that's one of the problems of the club. We have to focus on what we have, we have to focus on the academy and also make sure you have clear profiles of the players when you get them. There are a lot of details to manage.
“We have international players, they are good players and we need time to teach our idea and then we will see. Because this is a huge club. If you don't win, the coach goes and the players go. We have to improve As a team we have to sort out a lot of things in our club before we just think about buying or selling players. There is still a lot to do, so let's focus on improving our players.”
