Former Belgium International Raja Nainggolan is accused of participating in a criminal organization as part of a probe to cocaine trade, said the office of the Public Procurutor of Brussels on Tuesday.
The office of the public prosecutor said that the 36-year-old Nainggolan was released under certain conditions. His next judicial date was not specified.
The research focuses on the alleged import of cocaine from South America via the port of Antwerp and its redistribution in Belgium, the office said.
The Nainggolan arrest was announced on Monday after the federal police had carried out searches in the province of Antwerp and in and around Brussels. They said they had seized 2.7 kilos (almost 6 pounds) of cocaine, along with cash and luxury items. Sixteen arrests were made.
It was not immediately known whether Nainggolan has legal representation to respond.
After a few months without a club, Nainggolan came from retirement to play for a second-layer Belgian Team Lokers-Temse. He celebrated his debut with a goal directly from a corner last weekend.
Nainggolan has made 30 performances for Belgium, but has no longer played for the Red Devils since March 2018.
The central midfielder spent most of his career in Italy, especially playing for Roma and Inter Milan.
