Experience and struggle have prepared PSG for Champions League glory, says Luis Enrique

Paris Saint-Germain Head Coach Luis Enrique is convinced that his youthful team is ready to achieve their first Champions League title while preparing for Saturday's final against Inter.

The former boss of Barcelona believes that the experience of his team in large competitions in the past two years, under his guidance, has brought them into a strong position to lift the trophy in Munich.

Luis Enrique added that the obstacles that are confronted by his side during the first half of the season have served as motivation for them when they prepare for an experienced interkant.

“We are a team that is used to playing in the final; these are situations that we are used to and have already experienced. Motivation is important, but we are used to it,” Luis Enrique told a press conference.

“There are always two ways to interpret experience, it can play both sides. I think it is important to have experience, but it is still very relative.

“What makes us strong as a team is that our journey has been difficult: there have been ups and downs, but struggling can be an advantage.

“We are used to playing this final, we played against some of the best teams in Europe, and we have played a number of real finals along the way. We are ready, we will not be afraid.”

Luis Enrique, who won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2015, wants to become the sixth manager who wins the trophy with two different clubs.

However, this competition is the downfall of PSG in recent years, the French side that played the fourth most games (167) without ever winning the European Cup/Champions League since it started in 1955.

They are only behind Arsenal (211), Dynamo Kyiv (185) and Atletico Madrid (176) in that aspect, while a victory on Saturday would have the most matches before they win their first trophy, with Manchester City most of them at 116 before they won their 117th match in the final against Inter in 2023.

This seems to be another PSG side under the Spaniard, whose side both have won their most competitions (10) and scored their most goals (33) in a single major European campaign this season.

And Luis Enrique said his primary motivation was to write history with PSG, who will look to avenge their last defeat of the Champions League against Bayern Munich in 2019-2020.

“I am calm thanks to my maturity: I am 10 years older and more experienced,” said the PSG boss, who previously thinks about his European success with Barcelona.

“I try to share all this with my players: they can write history, I want to make sure there is no surplus emotion. I think we are ready, and I think Inter knows that we are ready too.”

One of his remarkable achievements this season has been his cherish by Ousmane Dembele in a potential balloon d'Or winner.

Dembele has indeed been directly involved in 12 Champions League goals this season (eight goals, four assists); The most ever by a PSG player in one campaign.

“Ousmane has been one of the best players of the season, if not the best: he is a leader, someone who drives the team ahead with his example,” he added.

“It's great to be able to set him up and trust him to get the most out of his qualities.”
