FA Cup prize money by round explained as EPL big guns enter competition

The Premier League's majors are competing in the FA Cup this weekend and while there is still plenty of mystique for fans of clubs lower down the pyramid, the financial rewards on offer remain minuscule compared to what is available elsewhere.

The third round action starts on Thursday with three draws, including Everton hosting Peterborough in what could be the final cup tie at Goodison Park, and will conclude on Monday when non-League side Dagenham and Redbridge play the short take a trip to Millwall.

In between, Arsenal host Manchester United in the most high-profile match, while Tottenham travel to Tamworth and Chelsea host League Two strugglers Morecambe.

But the 32 winners of the third round will receive just £115,000 in prize money, while the eventual winners in May will collect a total of £3.65 million.

That's before we take into account receipts and broadcast revenue, of course – which remain significant sources of income for sides like non-League Tamworth.

But it still pales in significance compared to the minimum £60m that the UEFA Champions League winners earn as part of a total package that hovers above £100m when other income streams are included. The Premier League champions have more than £60m in the bank before TV money.

There will be no replays in this weekend's third round, with the level of all matches determined after 90 minutes by extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shootout.

Manchester United won the final last year, beating neighbors City at Wembley.
