Fans love Cole Palmer’s reaction to learning why it’s called a Panenka

FANS loved Cole Palmer's reaction when he found out how the Panenka penalty got its name.

The 22-year-old Chelsea star executed a perfect Panenka penalty during the second half of his side's 4-3 win over Tottenham last weekend.

After firing his first penalty of the afternoon into the corner, Palmer coolly drilled his second through the middle and past the helpless Fraser Forster.

Panenka's penalty was born during the 1976 European Championship final, when Czech star Antonin Panenka hit the ball through the middle to beat West Germany in a penalty shoot-out.

In a conversation with the Belgian channel Playsport after the match, Palmer was introduced to the history of the technology.

The interviewer asked: “The second punishment, do you know who Antonin Panenka is?”

Palmer, staring blankly, replied, “Who?”

The interviewer continued, “Antonin Panenka. He was the father of your second penalty.

“The first to do it, in a European Championship final.”

Palmer then replied, “Oh, that's why it's called that? I didn't even know that.”

The Chelsea star then smiled as the interviewer said: “I taught you something, I'm happy!”

Fans loved Palmer's response, with one person writing on Reddit: “Please don't ever let the media train him!”

A second commented: “Effortlessly hilarious this man man.”

While a third claimed: “This man is a sweetheart.”

Another said: “This man is the perfect footballer.”

Palmer's Panenka was already his eleventh goal of the season.

The England star is not part of Chelsea's 25-man Europa Conference League squad and has been given this week off.

Enzo Maresca's team made a return trip of 11,000 kilometers this afternoon to meet Astana in Kazakhstan.

Palmer will be back in action next Sunday when Blues host Brentford in a west London derby.

The match starts on an unusual Sunday at 7pm.
