There was a general principle that no group could contain more than one team from the same confederation, except UEFA (Europe), which is represented by twelve clubs at the tournament. As a result, four of the eight groups contain two European clubs.

Clubs from the same affiliated association could also not be brought together and all clubs from Pot 1 were assigned to the first position of the group in which they were included.

For scheduling purposes, both US clubs – Inter Miami and Seattle Sounders – were automatically assigned to the fourth position in Groups A and B respectively.
