The match between Chelsea and Benfica was suspended with a few minutes left due to an approaching thunderstorm.
FIFA says: “Due to unfavorable weather conditions in Charlotte, including the risk of lightning near Bank of America Stadium, the FIFA Club World Cup match between SL Benfica and Chelsea FC has been suspended. A break of 30 minutes has been provided.
“FIFA will follow the established safety protocols and the competition will resume as soon as it is safe to do this.”
According to Nizaar Kinsellam, the two teams are expected to start warming up at 6.25 pm (11.25 pm BST) with the aim of restarting the game at 6.45 pm (11.45 pm BST).
However, this can still change if lightning affects the area of Charlotte or the surrounding radius of 10 miles because of the local safety protocols.
