Five people given prison sentences for racist abuse of Vinicius Junior

Five people were sentenced to racial abuse of Real Madrid Voordicius JR during a match in a milestone first statement in Spain who sentenced racist insults in a football stadium as a hate crime, Laliga said on Wednesday.

In December 2022, Brazil International Vinicius seemed to be subjected to abuse in Real's 2-0 victory to Real Valladolid while he walked past fans after he had been replaced in the Jose Zorrilla Stadium.

The Provincial Court of Valladolid imposed the five perpetrators a year in prison and fines ranging from 1,080 euros ($ 1,226.12) to 1,620 euros.

The prison sentences were suspended on condition that they will not be offense in the next three years, while they are not allowed to attend matches in the same period.

“Thanks to the efforts of Laliga, who submitted the complaint and initially acted as the only private persecution – later accompanied by the player Vinicius and Real Madrid, as well as the office of the public prosecutor – this exemplary statement has been reached,” said Liga in a statement.

“This judicial decision represents an unprecedented milestone in the fight against racism in sport in Spain, where statements had tackled behavior against moral integrity with a racial aggravating factor.

“The fact that this statement explicitly refers to hate crimes related to racist insults reinforces the message that intolerance has no room in football.”

Prison sentences of less than two years for non -violent crimes in Spain rarely require a suspect without previous convictions to serve imprisonment.

In June last year, three Valencia fans were sentenced to eight months in prison for insulting Vinicius with “shouting, gestures and hymns that refer to the color of his skin”.

In September, a fan that Vinicius and Villarreal player Samuel Chukwueze was found racially abused in two games in Mallorca in 2023 and handed over a suspended prison sentence.

The aggressor had suspended a 12 -month prison sentence after he had apologized into a letter to Vinicius and following anti -discrimination training, but was also banned from stadiums for three years.
