FIVE THINGS WE LEARNED from Frank’s Tottenham bow: How new £55m man Kudus got on

Thomas Frank's Tottenham Reign started with a 2-0 win in a pre-season-friendly reading for a crowd of more than 22,000.

Frank used 22 players who each had 45 minutes. It was aimless during the break and Will Lankshear and Luka Vuskovic scored the goals, early in the second half, viewed by chairman Daniel Levy in the first row of the directors' Box, was next to technical director Johan Lange.

Here are five things we have learned.

1) A form of the coming things

The first look in Frank's tactical plans came out of the form and he used a 4-2-3-1 formation in both halves, with fairly orthodox full-backs, two deep in midfielder and a number 10.

Alfie Devine, 20 years old and back from a season on loan in Westerlo in Belgium, was used as number 10 in the first half. After the break it was Jamie Donley, also 20, also back from a season on loan, in his case in Leyton Orient. But it is easy to see how James Maddison or Morgan Gibbs-White, if they can complete his signing from Nottingham Forest, can take that role.

Maddison, who missed the end of last season with a knee injury, was one of the absentee in Reading. He is still behind others on the preseason training schedule. Dejan Kulusevski can eventually also come to this comparison, but he recovers from a serious knee injury and will miss the start of the new season.

For the record, the line-ups …

First half: Kinsky; Porro, Romero, Danso, Udogie; Sarr, Bentancur; Johnson, Devine, Moore; Solanke.

Second half: Vicario; Spence, Vuskovic, Van de Ven, Davies; Bergvall, Bissouma; Kudus, Donley, son; Lankshear.

2) New faces that look at the part

There has been an exciting preamble for the arrival of Teenage Center Half Vuskovic from Hajduk Split via Leen Proverbs in Poland and Belgium, and fans were not disappointed because the 18-year-old center marked its first appearance in a Spurs shirt with a goal and an assist.

The Lange Croatian, who made his senior international debut in June, flashed on a corner through Mohamed Kudus for Lankshear to go into the opener and then moved forward to wipe in the second with his left foot of a pass by Kudus.

Vuskovic, who only played the second half, used in combination with Micky van de Ven, scored seven of the central defense for Westerlo in Belgium last season.

Kudus was involved in the goals and sharp on the ball. The first flash of him in full current came 12 minutes from the end, which shuffled past a few challenges in his own half and, with a change of pace, the ball forward wore the right victory before he spent Donley, who shot wide.

3) Seriously about Set pieces

After all the criticism of SET documents during the term of office of Ange Postecoglou, Frank wants us to know that this is an area that he is very serious. A long-term part of the warm-uproutine for the competition was the entire starting XI defending set pieces delivered from different corners by teenage George Abbott, one of the four unused Subs, with the spurs coaching staff sinking the attacking side.

Yet the most important threats of reading pieces came from set pieces, a fear with a free kick delivered by Charlie Savage in the first half and a cluster of corners in the second half.

Tottenham broke the impasse directly from a corner, taken by Kudus, implemented by Vuskovic and on the way to Lankshear from close by. The second came from a recycled corner, where Vuskovic is still lurking in the penalty area.

4) Glove of threatening tugboat

We should not read too far at this stage in Antonin Kinsky who starts the first half instead of Guglielmo Vicario, because this was a large team that came into two teams to play for 45 minutes each, but Frank has a decision to take in goal.

Kinsky certainly looked comfortable with the ball at his feet here, and Frank clearly asked his team to play from behind where possible. Vicario struggled and was susceptible to errors after his return from a broken ankle last season.

He has also had his well-documented problems of SET pieces, but is one of the leaders of the dressing room and has made a great salvation in the final phase at Reading. It is a big call for the new boss and he doesn't want to hurry in it.

5) Still not in the front

Richarlison was the most striking absent and a reminder that there is no clear coverage for Dominic Solanke in the middle. Richarlison must be the first option, but cannot be trusted to be fit and available.

Lankshear, 20, is a natural center that made little impression on loan in West Bromwich Albion in the second half of last season, but the goal here after he came to find. Mathys Tel did not look completely comfortable as a center last season. Kudus will offer another option, although it is probably not a natural in that role, as they found at West Ham last season.

Son Heung-Min, another with experience in the role, could be before the end of the transfer window. Frank did nothing to destroy the theory when he spoke on Friday. Son was one of the last to report for training and looked slow when he came up for the second half, especially in comparison with the zipper of Kudus on the opposite flank.

The son's touch was tough and he misled a volley that he might have taken when he was at his sharpest.

Lucas Bergvall also looked rusty and made mistakes on the ball deep in midfield in the second half. But these things will not worry the new boss if he experiments with combinations and partnerships in different parts of the team to find out where chemistry and understanding is to carry out his instructions.

Ps

Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert and Tel all have a delayed schedule after they have had more free time after their role in the U21Seuro and trained on the training field. Kota Takai recently received his work permit and started training after moving Kawasaki Frontale in Japan, so it is not fully integrated.

Maddison is not yet training with the team after his knee -style injury at the end of last season. Kulusevsky and Radu Dragusin are lagging behind for a certain time this year after serious knee injuries.

Bryan Gil, who has no future with Spurs, is in Spain who is undergoing rehabilitation about an injury. Manor Solomon and Dane Scarlett were also absent.
