Forgotten former Man United star signed by Sir Alex Ferguson joins new club just hours after having contract ripped up

Former Manchester United -young Nick Powell has found a new club, just a few hours after his contract was torn by Stockport County.

The midfielder, now 31, was described by the great Sir Alex Ferguson as 'an exceptional talent' when he signed for the Red Devils for £ 6 million in 2012.

When only 18, he had just scored a blast for Crewe Alexandra in their play-off final victory of the League Two against Cheltenham and seemed destined for a successful career at Old Trafford.

But it just never succeeded for the Wonderkid born in Crewe.

After only having made six performances in his first campaign in Manchester, the last of Ferguson, Powell was considered a surplus by both David Moyes and Louis van Gaal and lent to Wigan Athletic, Leicester City and later Hull City.

In total, Powell played nine times for United and scored one goal before he was released in the summer of 2016.

Since then he has career for himself in the Football League, which for the first time enjoys a successful three -year period at Wigan Athletic, where he shot 41 goals in 140 performances.

Powell later moved to Stoke City and made more than 100 performances for the club, before signing for stockport in 2023.

He was a prominent member of their side in his first season, but was on the bank in League Two last season with much more regularity.

The Hatters announced his departure on Monday with a statement with the lecture: “The club can confirm that midfielder Nickll Edgely Park left after a mutual agreement to end his contact.”

But perhaps surprising it was only a few hours later that Powell found a new club, with Stockport's League Rivalen Bradford City who announced that they had secured his signature.

Speaking of the switch, the former man United Star said: 'I am really happy that I am here.

'I spoke with Graham Alexander, he sold the club to me and I am busy going.

“The crowd here is a huge attraction, having such large attendees in League One is a huge attraction for everyone.”

Alexander, who was appointed manager of the Bantams in 2023 and led them to promotion last season, added: 'Nick's power is undoubtedly and he is determined to re -discover the form he has shown many times before.

“It is a deal that fits with both parties and we look forward to helping him enjoy his football and show his quality again.”

Powell becomes Bradford's 10th signing of the summer while looking to put together a successful season in the League One.

They started their campaign strongly and win two of their three games and pull the other.
