Forgotten Liverpool star emerges shock favourite to become new manager of Championship club

Hull City reportedly sees a former Liverpool star as their next manager after the shock dismissal of Ruben Selles.

The Spaniard led the Tigers in safety on the last day of the championship season, but nevertheless took the boost after only six months.

The 41-year-old was fired the third head coach by Hull-owner Acun Ilicali in the last 12 months, with his exit the search for the fifth permanent boss of the club since the Turkish media mogul took control at the beginning of 2022.

According to the Sun, former Reds and the winger of Manchester City Albert Riera emerged as a leading candidate to become their next manager.

The Spaniard, who spent two seasons in Anfield under Rafael Benitez, is currently in charge of the Slovenian top-flight side NK cell, which is currently on its way to the last round of the period.

The report claims that Riera likes to be in England after spells responsible for colleague Slovenian Outfit Olimpija Ljubljana and Fallen French Giants Bordeaux.

Riera was appointed Bordeaux manager in October 2023 and returned to the French outfit after 66 performances for Les Girondis in the young years of his professional career between 2003 and 2005.

In later years he would move to Liverpool, where he would make 56 performances in all matches under Rafa Benitez, before he continued to play for Olympiacos, Watford and various other parties.

The Spain International was suspended by Benitez in 2010 after he openly criticized the Reds boss and called Liverpool, according to the Guardian, a 'sinking ship'.

Riera went up his boots in 2016 before he got into management.

Earlier this month, Selles' removal came as a shock for many Hull fans who had just seen their side avoid relegation to the third level.

Hull went to the last day of the season in the bottom three and a 1-1 draw at Portsmouth was enough to save them, while Selles won nine of his 27 league games.

After that result, Selles had admitted that the season had been a 'really difficult'.

Selles had signed the Tigers for a two and a half year deal when he stopped as head coach of Reading to replace Tim Walter.

Walter was appointed as successor to Liam Rosenior, who was fired in May 2024 after supervising Hull to a seventh placed finish, with the play-offs missing with three points.

In addition to Riera, the former QPR and Rangers -Baas Michael Beale is reportedly also about the shortlist of candidates to take over. According to the sun, he was interviewed for the post.

It has also been claimed that former midfielder of Newcastle Emre Belozoglu is a different name on the shortlist.
