Former Atletico Madrid star Axel Witsel can go back to La Liga prior to the incoming season 2025/26.
The Belgian international chose to sign a one -year contract extension in Madrid last summer as part of a short -term pattern in the Spanish capital.
Witsel played a key role in the Diego Simeone team in 2022/23 and 2023/24 with 68 LA Liga performances from 78 games.
His role, however, was considerably reduced in 2024/25 with Jose Maria Gimenez, Clement Lenglet and Robin Le Normand for him in the central pecking order.
A large number of newcomers this summer, including a permanent deal with Barcelona to keep Lenglet, spelled the end of his time in the club after the FIFA Club World Cup.
Witsel left as a free agent at the expiry of his contract with Marc Pubill and David Hancko who also came in as part of Simeone's rebuild.
Although he is connected to a move to the Saudi Pro League, Witsel has remained dedicated to stay and play his football in Europe. While next summer he will be in a place in the FIFA World Cup team in Belgium in 2026 next summer.
A rumors from the Serie A-side Udinese has been rejected and transfer expert Sacha Tavolieri has tipped him for a two-year contract in Girona.
The added bonus of an extra year put on the table, where Udinese prefers one – with the option to stay in 2026/27 – has proven crucially and Witsel could now be in Catalonia before the start of the new campaign.
Girona will start their La Liga season at home on Rayo Vallecano on 15 August with Belgium with two World Cup qualifications in September.
Pres season for Girona contained a Copa Catalunya victory on Espanyol, in addition to victories on Olot, Alaves and Wolves, both sides of losses against Marseille and Napoli.
