Official statement from the club

Liverpool FC is deeply sad due to the death of Joey Jones, 70 years old.

A competition, European Cup and UEFA Cup winner with the Reds, the Welshman made exactly 100 performances for the club in the second half of the 1970s.

The tough tackling left back was signed from Wrexham by Bob Paisley as a 20-year-old in the summer of 1975 and was 14 times in all competitions during his debut season.

Unfortunately, he missed the medal of a competition winner with only one match, with his 13 performances in the top flight insufficient to qualify at that time, but stood on the couch for both legs of the UEFA Cup Final victory over Club Brugge.

Every personal disappointment was forgotten in the next campaign when Jones made the position of his own position and informed 59 games in a hugely memorable season.

The charges of Paisley successfully defended their championship crown – Jones played 39 of 42 games – while at the same time he wrote history as the first Liverpool team that lifted the European Cup.

The defender was involved in the final during the run and started in Rome when Borussia Monchengladbach was beaten 3-1 to achieve old big ears.

The contributions of Jones to a journey that the Reds had seen eliminate Saint-Etienne and FC Zurich in previous rounds were amusing on a banner who took a legendary place in LFC-Folklore.

“Joey ate the legs of the frogs,” read it. “Made the Swiss role, now he is Gladbach.”

There was perhaps a Treble for Joey and his teammates, but they were 2-1 excluded by Manchester United in the FA Cup final.

Jones' attitude and dedication had long earned him the affection of the Liverpool supporters and he reached a century of matches in January 1978. He also scored three goals in the club.

Later in the same year, after he was displaced in the XI of the Reds, he said goodbye to Anfield and returned to Wrexham for a second spell.

Joey then spent time with Chelsea and Huddersfield Town before completing his gaming career with a third Wrexham stint.

He also represented Wales at senior international level more than 70 times.

The thoughts of everyone at LFC are with Joey's family and friends in this sad time.
