Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez in contention for top job at Botafogo

Rafa Benitez is on the last two candidates for the vacancy of the head coach with Copa Libertadores Kampioenen Botafogo.

Mail Sport understands that the former Liverpool -Baas in advanced discussions is with the Brazilian club, who is owned by the majority shareholder of Crystal Palace, John Textor, about a shock return to football management.

Discussions with Benitez are described as underway by well -placed sources with a final decision about who will replace Artur Jorge, which the club left last month.

But Benitez has impressed the leading members of the Hierarchy of Botafogo and has an excellent opportunity to take the job.

Portuguese coach Vasco Matos and Argentinian Tato Martino are reportedly the other contenders for the position.

Benitez has enjoyed an excellent career in European football. In addition to his historical enchantment in Anfield, where he lifted the Champions League, the Spaniard is also managed in Chelsea, Valencia, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Everton and Newcastle.

But he is no longer a job since he left Celta Vigo in March 2024.

The 64-year-old, however, is close to getting a return to football with Botafogo, who are the ruling Brazilian and South American champions.

Botafogo will participate in the inaugural club World Cup later this year.
