Former Manchester United star Nemanja Matic has received a ban in France after sticking an LGBTQ+ logo during a competition.
Matic, who is now playing for Lyon, is struck with a ban on two games after covering the rainbow-colored Ligue 1 logo on his shirt against Angers on the last day of the season.
Ligue 1 performs an annual anti-homophobia campaign that requires players to wear the images and sees banners in stadiums.
Another player, Le Havre -Midfielder Ahmed Hassan, has received the same BanaFter that covers his logo. Nantes Striker Mostafa Mohamed, however, was not punished after he refused to participate in the last game of the season.
Matic is supposed to be a supporter of the Serbian Orthodox Christian Church, while Mohamed and Hassan are Muslims.
Matic and Hassan have also been asked to participate in an awareness campaign about homophobia in football, according to HLN.
The French sports minister Marie Barsacq said: 'Football has a huge platform and the federation wants to bring this problem to the attention of clubs and supporters.
'Homophobic insults and behavior are no longer acceptable. Society has developed and has to follow football. '
The initiative of Ligue 1, which has now seen five editions, has seen an annual commotion with players who refuse to participate, usually for religious reasons.
