Former Man Utd and Barcelona star sentenced for Rolls-Royce drink driving

The Dutchman was caught driving in Monaco and made a suspended prison sentence along with a big fine.

A court in Monaco convicted Memphis Depay after the former Manchester United and Barcelona attacker was caught driving on drinks in August.

The 30-year-old recently came to the Brazilian club Corinthians last summer, so it was not personally in court to hear the conviction. He has received a conditional prison sentence of four months and a fine of around $ 9,000.

He was arrested when the police saw him riding his Rolls-Royce recklessly. He was persuaded, breathed and was above the legal alcohol limit. Shortly thereafter he admitted the violation and publicly apologized.

This week, after the conviction, he issued another explanation in which he offered further explanation: “I would like to come here and apologize. Last summer during my vacation in Monaco I made a mistake and I decided to drive home after some drinks in a restaurant. Instead I should have come in a taxi, but I didn't. “

“So I would like to apologize and want to take full responsibility for my action. 2024 was a year of lessons, and I will certainly learn from this. 2025 We will do better. “

Depay's time in Europe brought him to some of the world's largest clubs, starting at PSV before he played for Man Utd, Lyon, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. When his Atléti contract expired, he moved to Brazilian giant Corinthians.

In addition to an impressive club career, he played for the Dutch national team. Depay has represented his nation 98 times and scored 46 goals. Only Robin van Persie (50 goals) has scored more for the Netherlands, and Depay is still only 30 years old.
