Former Man Utd director Ashworth appointed FA chief football officer

Dan Ashworth has returned to the football club and has been named first Chief Football Officer.

Ashworth had previously been the FAs director of Elite Development and then technical director for a period of six years between 2013 and 2019 before he left to work in club football.

The 54-year-old then left with Brighton, before he came to Newcastle United as a sports director in 2022 and then held the same position in Manchester United between July and December 2024.

In its new role at the FA, Ashworth will be given the task of leading the high-quality strategy, with its responsibilities, including the development of a successful England team and the growing of the number of home-grown coaches.

He will also supervise the regeneration of the National Football Center St George's Park prior to Euro 2028, which is organized by England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.

During his appointment, FA CEO Mark Bullingham said: “Then a hugely influential and respected figure in the game, who has a long -term dedication to English football.

“We are very happy to welcome him back in this new role.”
