Former UFC prospect suffers one of the most bizarre injuries of all time… ‘I felt an absurd pain’

Former UFC prospect and teammate of Charles Oliveira, Mateus Mendoca, suffered one of the most unique and bizarre injuries in MMA history.

After earning a UFC contract following a Contender Series win over Dana White in 2022, Mateus Mendoca was thrust straight into the deep end when he was paired with Javid Basharat.

The Brazilian went on to fight three times under the UFC banner, but unfortunately lost all three of his appearances and was subsequently cut from the promotion.

Mateus Mendoca suffers a broken penis during training

After being cut from the UFC following his losing streak, the 25-year-old returned to the regional scene in Brazil, scoring a first-round submission victory last October.

However, since his victory, Mendonca has suffered an extremely unfortunate and unique injury that stands out as one of the most bizarre in the history of the sport.

A few days ago, the 25-year-old revealed that he suffered a broken penis while rolling in jiu-jitsu, which required emergency surgery.

Mendonca trains at the Chute Box gym with UFC star Charles Oliveira and others. He admitted that he was rolling without a protective cup, something he will never do again.

“I was training with (a teammate). And he landed his knee on my penis. And I felt an absurd pain and went to the bathroom. I was in Sao Paulo the other day and my thing looked weird, it looked different, there was a lump in it,” he explained to AgFight.

“My girl told me to go to the hospital and they did an ultrasound test and told me to go straight to another hospital for emergency surgery,” he continued.

Other particularly serious injuries in MMA

Throughout the UFC's three-decade history, there have been a number of other terrible, more common injuries to fighters.

Anderson Silva's horrific leg break against Chris Wiedman in 2013 was one of the most devastating injuries ever suffered in the cage, as was Conor McGregor's broken ankle against Dustin Poirier in 2021.

One of the other, more bizarre-looking injuries came when Joanna Jedrzejczyk fought Zhang Weili in 2020 in a fight that would last for the ages. After five incredibly close rounds, the former strawweight queen looked unrecognizable, with what appeared to be a second head.
