Liverpool have been extremely quiet this summer and their main signing has been goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who is on loan at Valencia.
Federico Chiesa came over from Juventus, but has hardly suffered as his injury hell continued. Arne Slot wanted to take over Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, but the Spanish midfielder turned down that move at the eleventh hour.
Finally, Ryan Gravenberch has successfully turned into a number 6 and it appears the Zubimendi ship has sailed. Much depends on the futures of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool will not replace any of them before the summer.
Slot claims that the club is in “constant discussions” with the trio of stars and still hopes to retain them. But what could Liverpool do in the January window?
INS
Antonee Robinson
Slot needs to start working on his squad regardless of what happens with Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold, and the left back is going to be a problem. Andy Robertson's form is starting to cause concern and he has had a difficult few weeks, giving away penalties against Real Madrid and Southampton before being sent off after just 17 minutes against Fulham.
He was also called on by Jordan Ayew for Leicester's goal in Liverpool's 3–1 win over Leicester. Robertson turns 31 in March and the Scotland captain's pace appears to be slowing, which is alarming. Kostas Tsimikas is an excellent substitute, but not a regular starter and Slot needs to make a decision on who he wants to act as left-back long-term.
Robinson has been linked and the Fulham captain was excellent in the Cottagers' draw at Anfield earlier this month, assisting on both goals. He has the pace and energy that Slot demands from his side and he can turn defense into attack in the blink of an eye.
Robinson, 27, signed a five-year contract with Fulham in 2023 and while Marco Silva admits the US international could leave, the Cottagers can pretty much name their price. This could put him out of Liverpool's reach, although they are not as badly affected by PSR as some of their rivals, having made profits during the summer transfer window.
OUT
Tyler Morton
Liverpool's young players have not played as much as last season, mainly because Liverpool have not had the same injury crisis and Slot could decide to loan some out to get some initial action. Morton, 22, spent last season on loan at Blackburn and Hull and has made just three senior appearances this season.
James McConnell
McConnell, 20, has had to be patient this season and Slot gave him his only appearance to date in the Carabao Cup win over Southampton. The midfielder played nine games under Jürgen Klopp last season, including in the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.
Jayden Danns
18-year-old Danns is yet to feature this season, but scored twice against Southampton in the FA Cup last season. The son of the much-travelled Neil, who played for many clubs for Crystal Palace and Bolton, he has enormous potential and also played in the Carabao Cup final last season.
