France 2-1 England PLAYER RATINGS: Which Lionesses duo played like strangers?

England started the defense of their euro crown with a 2-1 defeat against France in Zurich on Saturday evening.

The lion ribbons started clearly, with Lauren James and Alessia Russo, both of which went into the opening phase before a Niet -access goal saw their early momentum stall.

But France, who came into play after they have won their last 10 group stage matches in the euros, scored England with two goals for the break to leave Sarina Wiegman's side Shell-Shocked.

Keira Walsh pulled one back to generate the hope for a dramatic finish, but despite a flurry of late chances, England could not find an equalizer on a frustrating night.

The result leaves the reigning champions with the work to do in a heavy group if they want to keep their hope to defend the title alive.

Read on for Lionesses Player Reviews thanks to Stephen Davies.

Hannah Hampton 7.5

Well caught, even better distributed and authority between the sticks. Could not do anything about the French goals and save a fine on the second period.

Lucy Bronze 5.5

Time and again pushed back by Baltimore and Bacha who asked many questions. That is why it was difficult to come forward to support Mead.

Leah Williamson 6

Skipper and Greenwood sometimes played as strangers, although you could never doubt the spirit of Williamson. Place some large tackles.

Alex Greenwood 5.5

The besieged carter too often neglected. Won all her headers but struggled to stop the continuous blue tide. Could never accuse her of trouble.

Jess Carter 4.5

Loves getting forward, but was tied by the sublime Cascarino who gave the left back a scorching time. Screamed for more help from Greenwood and undoubtedly happy to get a breathing break after an hour.

Keira Walsh 5.5

She has long been the first name on the team magazine, but was over in midfield. Not one of the better games of the Chelsea Ace, but still gave England hope with a late goal.

Georgia Stanway 5

Found life hard in a midfield that dominated the French. And it was her lazy pass with which Les Bleuees could go in front.

Beth Mead 5

Had a big hand to play in the early not -Comedestaneous goal of England, but then found it difficult to participate. Pay attention by poor service and well -marryed by the French defense.

Lauren James 6

A real box of tricks for 20 minutes to justify her place in the side, but, like so many of her teammates, began to become the boss. Understandably faded and removed.

Lauren Hemp 5.5

Just like Mead, a peripheral figure was after a clear start. I just didn't get a change from a wild French back line.

Alessia Russo 5.5

Was all smiling after she thought she had put England only for VAR to say otherwise. From that moment on, the Arsenal Forward had trouble participating.

Replacement

Manager: Sarina Wiegman 4.5

The boss of England probably couldn't believe what she saw in the first half. Triple substitution for the hour was positive, but cutting a helpless figure on the touchlines.
