Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé is fully fit, and has been for the past two international matches, but the French captain was not part of Didier Deschamps' squad on either occasion. The first time was attributed to injury, with Deschamps explaining that it was better for him not to be part of the squad this time so he could focus on getting back to his best.
Certainly, that is what he has strived for at the Santiago Bernabéu, but he has struggled in recent games. There are some theories that Deschamps punished Mbappe for skipping the last camp with an injury instead of asking him, something that has been denied.
However, it has brought his role as captain of the French team into question. The public reaction has not been kind to Mbappe, and L'Equipe says Deschamps is considering appointing another captain. Their information, as provided by Diario AS, says Deschamps will call Mbappe to see if he wants to continue as captain. If he does, Deschamps will not argue and continue to support him.
Mbappé's appointment itself was the subject of controversy. Many in France believed that Antoine Griezmann should have taken over from Hugo Lloris, and some have even cited this as the reason for the Atletico Madrid star's surprise exit from France. Since the 2022 World Cup, Mbappe has struggled to reach the same heights with Les Bleus.
