In recent years, the future of Frenkie de Jong as a Barcelona player has regularly caused speculation, with many reports stating that he could leave at any time. However, he is still in the Catalan capital and his stay could continue for many years.
That probably never looked like in the season when De Jong struggled for form after returning an injury of five months. He was not calculated by Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick after a series of bad performances, but in recent months he has turned his fortunes.
De Jong is now considered a starter in Flick's “Gala XI”, and he walks for Marc Casado in the pecking order in the defensive midfield. As a result, his future has also been evaluated and there is a good chance that he will stay in Catalonia after the summer.
De Jong sees his contract expiring in the summer of 2026 and given that he would be in the last 12 months at the end of the season, a sale was expected. However, that will no longer happen, especially since Flick would have convinced the Dutch Pivot to stay.
And according to Cadena Ser, De Jong has indicated that he would really like to sign a new contract. The expectation is that these negotiations, led by Barcelona Sporting Director Deco, will start in the coming weeks.
The concern that Barcelona has had with De Jong is his current salary. His wages are not feasible for a club that is seriously struggling with financial problems, so they have to look to take a salary decrease during these planned negotiations. If that cannot be arranged, there may be problems for all parties involved.
