Real Madrid has so far much more focused on income than expenditure this summer, with the arrivals from Dean Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold and of course new manager Xabi Alonso dominate the headlines. However, as was the case last summer, there is uncertainty about the future of goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.
The Ukrainian shot stopper burst on stage last season, after Thibaut Courtois was excluded with a knee injury in the long term. His heroism in the Champions League, including a penalty shootout-winning Save against Manchester City played a crucial role in Los Blancos that lifted the title of 2024. However, after he had lost his place at the again Fit Courtois for the final, Lunin would be open to a departure.
It was thought that Lunin was looking for an exit, and despite the fact that he was another year, agreed with a contract extension with Los Blancos until 2030. That deal was agreed after Lunin Jorge had hired Mendes as his agent, but was the word that the contract renewal allowed Lunin to stay in the club this season. Real Madrid in front of them protected their negotiating position, but is open to let him go for a reimbursement of approximately € 20-25 million.
According to Television Publica de Asturias (via MD), Real Oviedo is said to be happy to sign him this summer. They would be interested in a loan agreement for Lunin, who spent the second half of the 2019/20 season on loan in the Carlos Tartiere. It is still to be seen whether Lunin would be open to the move, or whether Real Madrid would enable him to leave loan.
They would probably want to yield an alternative as a backup for the aging Courtois, and if there is little financial gain, they can see little benefit in the move. On the other hand, he was able to increase his value on the market. During spring, Manchester United was linked to Lunin, but those left have become quiet.
