Frimpong relishing chance to fill Alexander-Arnold’s ‘big boots’ at Liverpool

Jeremie Frimpong believes that he needs what is needed to fill the “big boots” that have been left by Trent Alexander-Arnold in Liverpool.

Just a few hours after the move from Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid was confirmed, the Premier League champions quickly moved to bring Frimpong to Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen.

The Reds caused the release clause of € 35 million of the 24-year-old € 35 million (£ 29.5 million) and he became the first signing of the club of the summer window.

Frimpong played an integral role in helping Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title in 2023-24 and made 53 performances in all competitions when they finished second in 2024-25.

The Dutch international has indeed scored more goals (19) than any other defender in Europe's top five competitions in all competitions since the start of the 2023-24 campaign.

Frimpong can work as a full-back or a winger and will try to offer the attacking creativity that Alexander-Arnold did during his great stint on Merseyside.

Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool with 354 performances in all competitions and played a key role in the two Premier League title profits of the Reds and 2019 Champions League success.

No other defender in the Premier League history has provided so many assists in the competition as Alexander-Arnold (64), while he also registered 82 target contributions in the top flight, only Leighton Baines (85) chased the defenders.

“They are big shoes, but it is Liverpool. It is a large team that wins trophies for a reason,” Frimpong told Sky Sports. “If you play for Liverpool, you have to fill in the shoes and perform. I have always believed in myself. I am a winner. That is what I will bring.”

“The Premier League is the best competition in the world. I grew up in Manchester, so I always wanted to come back. It was always the plan.

“I know how to be a champion at Bayer Leverkusen, so it is a privilege to become a member of a champion team, especially for Liverpool. From watching them playing for them is crazy.

“The manager told me how I can help the team and he really likes me as a player. It gave me extra motivation and conviction.”

Frimpong is not the only arrival in Liverpool from Leverkusen this summer, with the Reds completing a club record deal to bring Florian Wirtz to Anfield earlier this week.

Wirtz was also a crucial figure for work under Xabi Alonso, and made 119 performances under the Spaniard, while he scored 38 goals and delivered 43 assists.

With his friend who joins him as a new Liverpool player, Frimpong is enthusiastic that fans see what a special talent is the German international.

“He is my boy. He is a winner – a very, very special player and very hardworking. The competition will love him,” Frimpong added.

“I don't have to talk much, watch him. He doesn't crumble, he likes pressure. He is a man who makes you enjoy football with the way he plays.”
