With Dani Carvajal out for the rest of the season and no signs of any reinforcements in January, Lucas Vazquez is likely to get more playing time than he ever had at Real Madrid. His most involved campaign, however, is shaping up to be his last.
Los Blancos have signed successive one-year contract extensions for Vazquez, as is their policy with over-30s, and this season will be the same. Last year, talks about an extension of his contract went relatively smoothly, but Diario AS hinted that things could be a bit more difficult this season.
They say the club will leave the ball in Vazquez's court, but if they manage to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool, which they are optimistic about, then Vazquez will be the odd man out at the right-back position. The club are relying on Dani Carvajal despite his long-term injury and he is part of their plans for next season. Despite his importance in the dressing room, Alexander-Arnold could spell the end of his nine-year spell since returning from Espanyol.
The 33-year-old was a faithful servant before Los Blancos and achieved great success for them in a number of matches over the years, having re-converted to right-back from the right flank. Several Champions League semi-finals have been won with Vazquez on the pitch, but this season, like the entire Real Madrid backline, he has suffered defensively.
