Gabriel Martinelli impresses but has a huge hole to fill as Bukayo Saka limps out of Arsenal’s 5-1 win

By accident, Mikel Arteta may have finally unlocked Gabriel Martinelli's untapped potential.

Bukayo Saka's hamstring injury, which is so crucial for Arsenal, cannot be covered up. But after Martinelli's performances on Saturday evening, Arteta's right-wing replacement for the coming weeks is clear.

When Saka had to come off in the 24th minute, Arteta played substitute Leandro Trossard on the left flank and Martinelli moved to the right.

The change seemed to bring back a rawness to the Brazilian's game that has rarely been seen since the 2022/23 season, in which he scored 15 Premier League goals.

Instead of thinking through the situation on the ball or passing backwards, Martinelli ran towards his man on the right with venom, aiming for the byline.

It was the confidence of a man who seemed to have the task in front of him suddenly simplified for him by being able to run straight ahead on his stronger right foot, rather than the need to cut inside.

However Arsenal need him to shoot, with the timeline for Saka's absence unclear. It is the England man's third hamstring injury of the season and a major concern for the Gunners, whose best play often comes through his feet.

Raheem Sterling, who has yet to make an impact, is now also injured.

That leaves Martinelli with a big hole to fill, but also with a continued run in the team on the right wing, a position he won't get a chance in due to Saka's brilliance.

It could be the change he needs to revive his campaign and his position at Arsenal. The north London club have recently been linked with a number of wingers, amid suggestions that an upgrade from Martinelli is needed if Arteta's men are to stay in title contention.

This is the opportune time for him to prove his worth.
