Gary Lineker has said that Liverpool should bring in a traditional number nine this summer.
After the matte version of Liverpool on Wembley on Sunday afternoon, they saw 2-1 falling to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final, Lineker emphasized the forward line as an important problem for the Reds. The side of Arne Slot was hardly bothered by the defense of Newcastle and achieved one meager two details in the Magpies box during the first half and only two shots on the goal during the entire game. The impact was at least despite the late goal of Federico Chiesa, which indicates a clear struggle in advance.
With Liverpool who draws an empty midweek in their Champions League round from 16 exit to Paris Saint-Germain, the former Leicester striker believes that they need a player in the form of a classic center-forward, something they currently do not have in their arsenal.
Talking about his podcast 'The rest is Football' with Micah Richards, Lineker discussed the recent issues of the Reds and how to add a different dimension to their attack. “It was very much in Newcastle's Day today. It was real,” said Lineker, before he threw a demand for Richards.
“Where do you think Liverpool, I mean, they have had such a good season until the last few weeks, but where do you think they should strengthen? I would say, I think they need a nine,” he added.
Although Mohamed Salah has often dominated the headlines this season with a stunning return of 32 goals insofar as the Reds strive for Premier League -glory, the same cannot be said for the other attackers of Liverpool. Cody Gakpo has a healthy return of 16 in all competitions, but Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez are all left behind 13, eight and seven respectively.
The Reds are reportedly interested in Alexander Isak from Newcastle, who again played heads on Sunday. A constant threat during the game, Isak closed his day with a cool finish in the second half, perhaps Liverpool left what they need once the season is completed, the Liverpool Echo reports.
In accordance with Lineker, Richards emphasized the need of Liverpool on more firepower in advance and suggested that the team should be strengthened in different positions. “I think they need a nine. I think they need the back left,” he said.
“I think Robertson has been a fantastic servant for Liverpool. I know they are linked to Kerkez in Bournemouth. He has real energy. He is really good. I really like him.
“I love Connor Bradley right away. I really believe they need another center of center only for coverage. I think you know, if Konate touches his injuries, or depends on what happens to Van Dijk, I think they can freshen up everywhere.
“Slot has the chance to get exactly what he wants in this system and this team. I look forward to seeing what they are doing businesslike. But yes, I think they should freshen up in all positions.”
