Gerard Pique suggests radical rule change which would revolutionise football

Barcelona legend Gerard Pique has proposed a radical control change that he says will make football more exciting.

The former Spain defender has long been in favor of adapting the beautiful game to address a younger audience with a shorter attention span.

He hung up his boots in November 2022, but led a number of projects in the sport, including the formation of the Kings League, combining the worlds of Twitch Streaming and Elite Football in a five-a-side tournament.

And now the 38-year-old has revealed how he thinks that football should change if it is to maintain the attention of a younger audience.

Pique, spoken on a podcast organized by his former teammate of Spain, said Pique: 'It is not possible that you go to a football stadium, spend € 100, € 200 or € 300 and the match ends with 0-0.

“Something has to change. A proposal that should be considered would be that if the game ended with 0-0, the teams would score zero points.

“The game would open in the 70th minute.”

This is not the first time that Pique has been encouraged for a radical change in the rules of football. Speaking last year, the World Cup winner suggested to completely remove the game from the game.

“Football is entertainment, so it's not just competing with other sports,” he said.

'It competes with Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, Tiktok. Everyone has a limited time. Football for 90 minutes is not that exciting. '

'Maybe there are no treks, why not? There are no draws in baseball and basketball. You go to a game and it ends with a draw and the feeling is: “Who has won?”

'Football is afraid of change. It has a huge history, it is very traditional, but change will happen, it must happen. A 90-minute game that can end 0-0 is hard to understand for the new generation. '

But unfortunately for those who agree with the innovative ideas of Pique, it does not see that he will soon be plunging into the world of football administration.

When asked if he might be better placed a UEFA with legislators FIFA, he added: 'Very boring. You can't change much. With the processes, the committees, it is a nightmare. '
