Real Madrid's injury crisis has left Carlo Ancelotti with very few options in the center of defence. Eder Militao suffered a second cruciate ligament rupture in 15 months during last weekend's victory over Osasuna, meaning he joins David Alaba and Aurelien Tchouameni in the medical room.
It meant Raul Asencio made his Real Madrid debut last weekend and he made a big impression. The expectation is that Ancelotti will rely on him as a starter until Tchouameni returns, but even if that happens, he is expected to remain in and around the first-team setup for the remainder of this season.
That's bad news for Girona and Celta Vigo, who were both eyeing a move for the 21-year-old during the upcoming winter transfer window. According to Marca, a deal in January is now described as “impossible”.
Real Madrid will likely consider selling Asencio next summer, although his value is now significantly higher than it was a few weeks ago. It is also not impossible that he will remain in the first team next season, although that would certainly only happen if a new central defender is not signed in 2025.
