Barcelona is planning to organize outputs for different players between now and the end of the summer transfer window, and one of those who leave in line is Inaki Pena. The goalkeeper is not in the plans of Hansi Flick for the 2025-26 season, so he can leave to play regularly elsewhere.
Pena was expected to leave Barcelona permanently, but it has now been decided that he will do this on loan. Prior to his exit, he will sign a one -year contract extension until 2027, so that the Catalans can make a decision about his future next summer.
In terms of interest, Pena is closest near Serie A Side Como. However, there is now a chance that he will stay in Catalonia, with MD reporting that Girona has registered their interest in signing him as a possible replacement for Paulo Gazzaniga.
Last Friday, Gazzaniga generated many doubts within Girona after his horror performance against Rayo Vallecano. The Argentinian goalkeeper gave Jorge de Frutos a goal before polluting the winger in the penalty area – which also led him to be sent by referee Javier Alberola Rojas.
On Wednesday morning Pena's agent Barcelona met sports director Deco to discuss the situation of the 26-year-old. Girona's interest would have been one of the talk points, and compared to Como it could be a favorable step – especially if an agreement was reached before the weekend, because it would enable him to make his step against Villarreal on Sunday.
For now it is still to be seen where Pena ends up, but it is guaranteed that he will not remain as a Barcelona player for the 2025-26 campaign.
