Newcastle star Anthony Gordon has spoken out about his future and addressed rumors linking him with a move to Liverpool.
Gordon is already a boyhood Liverpool fan and Mirror Football understands the two clubs held talks last summer, but the deal collapsed after Newcastle suggested Jarell Quansah could go in the opposite direction.
Gordon has since signed a new long-term contract with Newcastle and appeared to address the rumors by making talking gestures with his hands as he celebrated his goal in the 3-3 draw against Liverpool earlier this month.
And when asked about the celebration, the England international admitted he was frustrated by the ongoing speculation that he would be joining Liverpool. “I loved the game, I didn't need any more motivation for that game,” Gordon told Sky Sports News.
“The celebration was just that this year I had heard so much talk about my future, where I'm going, where I want to go, without anyone asking me. Just let me play football, I just want to be happy, play football.
“I love it here, I've said it many times. I think with the speculation people assume it's all true, when you've never heard of me saying I'm unhappy in this place. I love everyone here.”
“I love playing football here. That's it.” Gordon also admitted the rumors had affected his form this season, but the winger insisted he wanted to stay at St James' Park.
“It stopped me from enjoying my football this year, and I think that's where the inconsistencies (in performances) come from, because I got a bit caught up in that,” he added. “But I just want to play football, especially for Newcastle.”
Gordon isn't the only Newcastle star to have been the subject of intense speculation over their future, with Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes also heavily linked with big-money moves. “I'm only 23,” he continued. “All I've heard is, 'When he leaves?'
“Who said I would ever leave? I'm very happy here, I love this place, I love playing football here and I think Bruno and Alex probably think the same. But we're all young, we're all human , so when people talk about that, it calls into question our character.”
