Government announces backing for Old Trafford regeneration project

Manchester United has received a big boost in their plans for a new, 100,000 capacity Old Trafford after the project has received government support.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has revealed that she will defend the regeneration project around Old Trafford.

The government said that the project, which will also lead to new homes, commercial and public spaces, would be a 'radiant example of the daring pro development model that will stimulate growth through the region'.

Authorities investigate the setting up of a Mayoral Development Corporation organ to develop the area.

The support of the government came after Mail Sport revealed earlier this month that the prospect of a new stadium and the demolition of the current Huis van Man United in the house of Man United had taken a step forward.

The group, including Gary Neville, mayor of Manchester Andy Burnham and Lord COE, was charged with investigating whether United Old Trafford would refurbish or should build a new ultramodern replacement on adjacent country.

They discovered that a redevelopment of the existing stadium, which has been in place since 1910, would be limited to 87,000.

However, a leading new location would potentially maximize and serve as the center of one of the largest regeneration projects that Great Britain has ever seen.

Although all options remain on the table, United officials will now focus their energies on a 100,000 new construction.

Mail Sport understands that key figures at the Premier League giants hope that engaging work before the end of this year could start the project.

A final decision will be made before the end of the season.

The task force was set up after the arrival of Ratcliffe and charged with conducting a feasibility study around a new build or a renovation.

It has shown that although redevelopment and rebuilding would provide both 'transformative benefits', a new stadium that would see benefits 'strengthened'.

Mayor of Greater Manchester Burnham described the proposals as 'The greatest chance for urban regeneration that this country has seen since London'.

“They are an important part of our 10-year plan to grow turbo ranges growth, not only around Old Trafford, but in Greater Manchester,” he added.
