‘Great fighter’… Ian Garry receives unlikely message of support from former UFC star after first loss

Darren Till has shocked everyone by praising Ian Garry.

The former MMA candidate watched from home as Ian Garry suffered the first defeat of his career at the hands of Shavkat Rakhmonov on Saturday evening.

A divisive figure, some cheered after seeing the Irishman fall short at UFC 310, but Darren Till insists he deserves credit for his performance.

Especially after he nearly scored a submission victory in the final round.

Darren Till sends a message to Ian Garry's haters

'The Gorilla' admitted he isn't Garry's biggest fan after UFC 310, but he didn't explain what issue he has with the 15-1 welterweight contender.

Till simply said now is not the time to hate on the 27-year-old.

At this point, he would like to congratulate Garry on his brilliant effort against a man many consider the best 170-pound fighter in MMA.

Till tweeted: “You can all hate on Ian Garry all you want and I will too, but let's not deny he is a great fighter. He almost had him in the fifth round.”

The comments section was filled with fans agreeing with Till. It appears that Garry has earned more credit with his defeat than he did for his previous victories over Michael 'Venom' Page and Geoff Neal.

Ian Garry happy with UFC 310 performance

Garry was relatively satisfied immediately after his first professional MMA loss.

After receiving praise from Conor McGregor, he spoke to reporters about not feeling defeated despite officially being defeated by unanimous decision.

“I don't feel like I lost today,” Garry told reporters at the UFC 310 post-fight press conference. “Maybe I wouldn't have raised my hand, but I came out and fought a giant. I came out, and I fought the boogeyman, and I showed him that he's fucking human.

“I went there on three weeks notice, I saved this event, I saved this card and against the scariest guy in the division. I went outside and stopped almost everything.

“There was no point where it looked like he was going to finish the fight, and I put him in two submissions. I took it back, and I had fun.

“I have shown that I can compete with the best in the division and tonight I proved in short order that I can absolutely become champion. I can last five rounds and there are no holes in my game. There was nothing that man brought for me tonight.

“He won based on his opinion, and that's okay. That's okay. I can live with that.”
