Greenwood could be AXED by Marseille this summer after being dropped by De Zerbi

Mason Greenwood was able to leave Marseille at the end of the season, despite his impressive debut campaign in France, according to a report.

The 23-year-old striker is still looking for the Ligue 1 Golden Boot after having 15 goals in 28 games for the French giants, but recent criticism from his manager Roberto de Zerbi has questioned his future.

After having been a guaranteed starter for a large part of the season, Greenwood had to make do with performances by the bank for collisions against Lens and Paris Saint-Germain.

The reason for the recent exile was apparently unveiled earlier this month by the Zerbi when he intimudes the former Manchester United -younger to his work rate expectations.

“Nobody can respect him (Greenwood) anymore than me,” said the Zerbi. “But that doesn't change anything: I expect more from him. He has to do more, because what he is currently showing is not enough.

'If he wants to reach his ambition to become a champion, he must be more consistent, sacrifice more and be determined.

'Otherwise we as a team always fall back in the same pattern: a very good match, then a defeat at Auxerre, than a victory against Nantes … It is too irregular, it is like waves. And that is something I don't like. '

According to RMC Sport journalist Florent Germain via BFM Marseille, Greenwood can be on his way to the exit door of Marseille if he does not pay attention to the advice of his manager.

“He is a player who can make a big difference, but to be honest, if he doesn't respond, questions are asked about a departure to Greenwood this summer,” Germain said.

“If he is unable to understand that his manager and his directors fought against a risk – more than a sporty risk – to bring him, to give him a visibility, because not gets.”

Recent reports have suggested that the Zerbi and management in Marseille are getting tired of a observed 'nonchalance', 'attitude' and 'lack of effort', according to RMC Sport.

The report claims that there is a 'huge gap between his potential and his contribution' to the team, given the general trend of Marseille of dominant competitions.

After he rose as one of the smartest young talents of Man United, he left the club last summer after he was arrested in January 2022 before being accused of attempted rape, assault and controlling and compulsive behavior.

The charges against Greenwood were withdrawn by the Crown Prosecution Service after the 'withdrawal of important witnesses and new material that comes to light'.

Greenwood housed his career on loan at the Spanish outfit Getafe last season, where he took 10 goals and six assists. Since then he has formally applied for his international faith of England, for whom he has made one outing, to Jamaica from Steve McClaren.
