Mason Greenwood's goal in Marseille's 2-0 win over St Etienne helped his side secure all three points to keep the pressure on Paris Saint-Germain, but the striker also saw it as a personal milestone in the process.
The former Manchester United striker joined Roberto De Zerbi's French team during the summer transfer window after spending the previous season on loan in LaLiga with Getafe.
The French giants signed Greenwood for £30 million from the Red Devils – a move that was initially unpopular with the club's entire fanbase, with furious supporters launching a #GreenwoodNotWelcome campaign when he was initially linked with Marseille.
The England international has not played for Man United since January 2022 and was loaned out to Getafe last season. He scored ten goals and registered six assists on his way to winning the club's player of the season title.
Greenwood was arrested that month and later charged in October 2022 with attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behavior, but the charges and the case were dropped in February 2023 when key witnesses withdrew. Greenwood has denied all allegations.
After appearing to have begun the early stages of rebuilding his career at Getafe, Greenwood has continued his strong form with Marseille this season and finished tenth in Ligue 1 on Sunday.
It was the first time he had scored that many in a single league match since scoring 10 in 31 appearances for Man United in 2019/20.
It also moved him into joint second place in the Ligue 1 scoring charts alongside PSG's Bradley Barcola, with 10 in 14 games, with only Lille's in-demand striker scoring more (11).
This makes him the first player since Sonny Anderson to score his first ten goals in French football in just fourteen games, the former Brazil international did so in 1994.
Greenwood's former club United has been struggling with goals for most of the season, although the arrival of Ruben Amorim has provided a positive boost in that regard.
The club's top scorer this season is Alejandro Garnacho with eight goals in all competitions, while Marcus Rashford's four lead the way in terms of goals in the Premier League.
Against historic giants St Etienne, both summer signings Greenwood and Adrien Rabiot were on target to take three points, leaving Marseille hot on the heels of PSG in the title race.
Earlier this month, Greenwood had converted a dramatic last-minute winner from the sport to beat Monaco 2-1.
De Zerbi's team is currently level with Monaco on 29 points, five points behind modern-day superpower PSG.
