Guardiola confirms Gundogan has earned new contract, but he might not sign it

Manchester City goes through a rebuilding and the future of Ilkay Gundogan with the Etihad, although he has caused a one -year contract extension

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Ilkay Gundogan has earned a contract extension, but that does not mean that he will still be at Etihad next season. Gundogan came again last summer at the city from Barcelona with a one -year -old deal.

However, his contract contained a clause that would cause an extension of a year if he made a certain number of performances for City and Gundogan played 43 games this season. Only Josko Gvardiol has been used more often by Guardiola.

However, Gundogan's future remains in the air, in which Guardiola admits that he does not know whether the midfielder will remain. City goes through a rebuilding, where the 33-year-old Kevin De Bruyne would leave the club when his deal ends in the summer and the 34-year-old Kyle Walker expected to have his loan switch to AC Milan permanently.

Gundogan is the oldest remaining outfield player of City and when he was asked about his future, Guardiola said: “He has a year more on his contract. I don't know what is going to happen, but he has had another year now.

“The Gundo from Leicester, the Gundo from Bournemouth and today's Gundo is the Gundo I remember. When we won the Treble, he was so important.

“His activity, space, his defensive intelligence, when he arrives. Gundo has been with us enormously. But as a team we couldn't help him. It's not about 'you, you, you'.

“Everyone was down. Everyone was below because the team did not play well. If the team plays well, the player arrives. Without it, in modern football, you can't do it.”

City is insisting on qualifying for next season's Champions League after passing a difficult campaign and currently fifth in the Premier League table. Gundogan imagined about citys in a recent interview and suggested that the team was missing “determination and desire”.

He said to ESPN earlier this month: “I feel that in many games on our part we may have sometimes given a little interest in tactics and not really pay attention to behavior of ourselves.

“Have that determination, that desire, aggressiveness. As simple things that are part of the game, but maybe you sometimes just think too much about positioning yourself or whatever.

“You may forget the other things that are a bit normal or that should at least be normal. To be honest, I see a certain change in the last few games, especially that uncomfortable, very uncomfortable match against Bournemouth in the FA Cup.

“The way they play – aggressive, physically strong – and the way we behave there at their place, especially after we also admitted the first, I think it was just incredible.”
